Toyota made history at the 2012 Dakar Rally in South America when three Toyota Hilux pickups built and developed in South Africa by Toyota Motorsport finished third, sixth and 11th in an 8 000-kilometre 15-day marathon that saw the original 161 starters in the car category reduced to 79 at the finish.

It is now a matter of record that 2009 Dakar winners Giniel de Villiers and German co-driver Dirk von Zitzewitz achieved a remarkable third place on the podium in a Toyota Hilux pickup backed by IMPERIAL Toyota, Duxbury Netgear and the Innovation Group.  Team-mates Duncan Vos and Rob Howie were 11th in the second IMPERIAL Toyota Hilux, while Argentine privateer Lucio Alvarez and Bernardo Graue were sixth in a Hilux entered by the Belgian Team Overdrive.

While the Imperial Toyota South Africa team was adding another chapter to the history of the Dakar Rally – in temperatures of up to 48ºC in the Atacama Desert of South America – another South African team was making history in temperatures of as low as -50ºC on the desolate white plains of the Antarctica.
